Hosting Matters is where this blog is hosted (for $11 a month), and for blogging that is sufficient, touch wood. But now that I podcast, I fear that I may get too good at it, and be linked to by the entire wwworld all at once. The podcast in question will either get jammed up and unavailable, or worse, available, but at a huge extra cost to me, in “bandwidth"(?).

The whole point of podcasting, like blogging, is that you can do it in an I-send-it-up-who-cares-where-it-comes-down? sort of way. It’s near enough free to do, and near enough free to consumer. Blog it. Forget it. And I want to be able to pod it and forget it too. But podcasting files are big, and if everyone wants one all at once, will one or other of my nightmares come true?

Next question: if there is substance to my fears, might bluehost.com be the answer to them? (Alex Singleton told me about them this afternoon.) Any informed comment would be most welcome.

Perhaps it’s time I did a Samizdata posting on the subject. If I do that, I’ll be deluged with advice, some of it even relevant, and not from Verity (see the comments).

Brian,
everyone has their pet host, and there are literally hundreds of them.

Rule of thumb, if hosting matters is good enough for Instapundit and Samizdata, it’s probably good enough for you.

In terms of costs: the way it works is that HM will bill you for the extra on a day basis, we’re talking pennies for thousands of hits.

My suggestion would be to install a donation button using PayPal for example, so that some of your excess traffic can help you out.

I actually have started using A Small Orange (asmallorange.com), because Hosting Matters’ tech support can be a bit...hostile. So far, I haven’t needed ASO’s tech support, but to me that’s a point in their favour.

NB I believe that Instapundit, at the very least, gets free hosting from Hosting Matters due to the exposure they get thanks to his blog. So it’s no measure of anything if he ain’t paying.

Thanks for all that.

The thing about bluehost.com that impressed me was the huge numbers, for disc space, bandwidth, etc., to say nothing of cost, compared to Hosting Matters.

Am I wrong to be impressed? Are there likely to be hidden problems associated with this that they don’t tell you about?

By the way I’ve not forgotten about your request for linkage to Antoine’s Grandad’s blog (http://exbrayat.typepad.com/charles_exbrayat/), which I have recently added to my blogroll. I hope that a blog posting will follow Real Soon Now.
